Some discussions I had in the last few days with different people made me think about the fashionability of different pairings.

I am a little bit of a ship slut, meaning that if the pairing is well written, I'll read almost everything (except for child porn), but there are some ships that I find more difficult to accept than others simply because I cannot see the chemistry between the actors. The two main example are Sam/Jack in the Stargate fandom and Buffy/Spike in the Buffy fandom.

But even accepting that I cannot see the chemistry because of my slash glasses, what I have problems with is the way in which fandoms move from one pairing to another are the pairing in fashion. For example in the Buffy fandom at the moment is all Spuffy and Spander, with writers ignored until then winning awards only because they switched pair, and (and the two phenomena are in no way to be linked) bad fic receiving praise only because it represent the right pairing in the right way.

Yes, because there is also a right way and a wrong way to present a pairing. For example I more or less stopped reading Jack/Daniel, one of my favourite pairings, because most of what I can find is Hurt comfort, in which the writers compete to inflict the most painful injuries/illnesses/tortures on daniel, so Jack can kiss it better. Similar fate seem to be happening to Sam/Josh fics in the West Wing, only in this case Sam is the sick one.

If you try something different, or you like something different, you have to dig and explore, (or re-read the fic you love) until your pairing/genre comes in fashion.

I'd like to hear what other people think of this, if it's only my impression or if you had similar (or different) experiences.

There are some people in my f-list (e.g. Bev, Jan and Jape, Moonshayde) who simply decided to create their own spaces, I'd like to hear from you too.

Moonshayde writes beautiful Stargate fic in unfashionable SG1 pairings, if you do not know her writing her latest brilliant effort is here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/moonshayde/167246.html#cutid1

Now, thanks to Sylum, I do have a nice, intelligent and multifandom f-list. Help Foxy understand, discuss.

Hey, House here. I have my pairings (both slash and (gasp!) het, but I can bend if a story is good (as an example, I am a CJ/Danny boy in West Wing, but can gladly read CJ/Toby stories).

Problem is, in some fandoms (I won't make names *coughHouseAliasLostWATecccough* if you don't conform to THE ship (S/V from Alias is a pretty good example) you are out. I have been called *mysoginous* (sp?) because I have said that House and Cameron are not good together, in my opinion. [But now it seems that, having shown them I am one of the only two Houses roaming the planet (beware of imitations!) they are back to normal.]

And poor Lauren has been devoured in the Alias fandom... I liked her... and I like Will too, who makes a better partner for Vaughn than Syd will ever be.

In three words, I heart you, guys, because Alias and Lost are the *only* two fandoms in which I am just slashy, and with the Jate-Skate and Sarkney-S/V wars in those, it's a hellish life.
