Just a song and a dance...
Jun. 29th, 2006 09:00 amRight. We are in the middle of an heatwave and this makes me cranky and sleepy. Hot weather always make me sleepy.
Most of my childhood summers where spent sleeping and reading away most of the day and being perky and annoying in the coolest hours in the middle of the night.
Nowadays I simply sleep, get restless once I reach the maximum humanly allowed Sleep quota before coma and allows my mind to pursue new obsessions.

Nowadays I simply sleep, get restless once I reach the maximum humanly allowed Sleep quota before coma and allows my mind to pursue new obsessions.
My new obsession is Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I found 8 different versions of this song, if somebody can point me more versions i would be glad:
Leonard Cohen
Jeff Buckley (still my favourite)
U2 (the worst one ever, made in the middle of their Pop phase when they wanted to keep up with the cool kidz and forgot how to be cool)
Bob Dylan
John Cale
KD Lang
Rufus Wainwright
Imogen Heap
It is one of my favourite songs, with a beautiful text and beautiful music that simply make my soul vibrate:

It is one of my favourite songs, with a beautiful text and beautiful music that simply make my soul vibrate:
I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
What did fed my obsession was a comment on TWiP on "how a show nowadays can't call itself cool without using this song in his soundtrack"
The first was the West Wing using it to soundtrack CJ's pain in the Season 3 final. The O.C. followed and I am sure my f-list can point me to some more examples.
My mind made the maths: covers of a song by artist, covers of a song by a show. So my question is: think of the song (if you don't know it ask me and I'll e-mail it to you) and think of a show: which characters/situation you can see this song used for?
Here are some of my ideas:
Lost
Kate, in finding Jack and Sawyer making up in the jungle.
Buffy
Weirdly enough, this looks like a Xander song to me. I think it's the verse that says:
Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Stargate SG1:

Stargate SG1:
Daniel during Season 4, in finding out that Jack and Sam had kept from him the whole Zatarc mess.
NCIS
Tony when finding out about Ziva's secret dinner.
The game can go on and be applied to most fandoms.
What are your inspirations and suggestions?
Do you agree with my picks or you have other that you think will fit?
Are there other songs you think this game can be played with?

Date: 2006-06-29 07:20 am (UTC)Season 1 I think...
And its on the songfic challenge somewhere too.
Hmmmm was personally picturing Speed and Horatio fighting, breaking up and then realising how stupid they were and trying to find the words to put things back together...could use that I think...
But I love your picks. *pokes Ody's Muse* Are we in for some treats soon?

Date: 2006-06-29 07:27 am (UTC)I think as a song it fits Speed pretty well too. *feeds the bunny*
*Tries to look innocent* My Muse? I think she has felt the heat and decided to go holiday in Antartic...
*looks around carefully*
*wishpers*
I actually was hoping this would get her back...but don't tell her or she'll never come back.

Date: 2006-06-29 01:13 pm (UTC)Jossverse-wise, I tend to think this is a vamp song- there's a world weariness here that speaks of both Angel and Spike to me, though I can see your reasoning at picking Xander. Giles also applies- mainly because I can see him liking Cohen.
Mainly though, this song is a Magnificient Seven song for me. I mean:
"Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you"
Very much the Seven. :D It's such a great angst song, all in all. I can understand the obsession.

The morning after, I was having coffee with him and we traded lyrics . Dylan * especially liked this last verse "And even though it all went wrong , I stand before the Lord of song With nothing on my lips but Hallelujah"
Leonard COHEN (interview,Paroles et Musiques,1985)
It's really interesting how he sees it in a completely different way...

Date: 2006-06-29 02:35 pm (UTC)I agree with all of the suggestions so far. Since I'm in the middle of editing the latest fic, NY is on the brain, and I have two examples.
1. Mac thinking about losing Claire
2. Danny at the end of season 1
Why these two? Because sometimes you need to be brought to your lowest before things can look up again.

I like your words about hope. I had my first Tai chi lesson and they said that is more difficult to move slowly than quickly, peacefully than anxiously, hopefully than angstily...but more rewarding too.
