One of my colleagues just posted the sordid details of her affair with another colleague on facebook. Everybody knew about it, but one thing is knowing the gossip, another one is reading about it.

She didn't do it in revenge, it's mostly a bit of self analysis like the ones I post in this journal, but it did strike me as wrong. My first thought was: It's facebook, everybody that knows you will read about it.

The friends you share, the colleagues you work with everyday, customers you deal with will read about it. I think this is my problem with facebook. No privacy at all. That's why I keep very quiet. I took out most of my personal information and any pictures and I rarely post, except the odd music video and reposts about the evils of the current Italian Prime Minister (everybody does it).

On livehournal and dreamwidth, you may say the most intimate of things and yet keep it private. Very few people on my f-list know my name and nobody knows me in RL.

I may talk about my health problems, my work things and my deepest emotions and yet never have to face people the day after.

When I write here I have the feeling that the few people that will read my posts will be nice and understanding. I feel protected here. I know that fandom can be a dangerous place, but I think that most journalling people share the same goals: to talk about themselves, their lives, their fics in a safe environment.

Facebook is more like a shark tank. RL is more of a shark tank. This is more of a goldfish bowl.
