American Goddess
Jul. 1st, 2005 08:25 amI have decided what I want to be when i grow up. I want to be like Patti Smith.
Last night I literally ended in Gloria a pretty premenstrual day, with an amazing Patti Smith gig.
I love her, her words, her music, her ability as performer, but especially her uniqueness as a woman and a performer. How many female singers nowadays can get on a stage without make-up, show off the lines on her face and the gray in their scruffy hair, dress in an old pair of jeans, an ill fitting t-shirt and a jacket that I am sure i have seen her wearing in the seventies, take off their boots while singing Dancing barefoot, and making the act of taking off her socks sexy, even if said socks spend the rest of the concert dangling from her pocket, and all the same have the crowd shouting at her "Sei Bellissima" (You are beautiful). And believe me, italians are fussy about electing their beautiful women. More than their politicians.
Since from the first song she had everybody in the audience hypnotised, dancing to her rhythm and the only thing that has changed throughout has been that people simply could'nt resist on their seats and had to get up and dance with her, move with her, sing with her, be with her. Even the friend who where with me, 60something and at her first rock concert, was enthralled.
She has managed to provide me with a deeply needed injection of hope and positivity. I can do it. I can be whatever I want, whatever I am, and I can do it with other people.
Blessed be Patti Smith, American Goddess.
