matilda36: (Riley don't say a word)

For those of you, who don't know, wee fics are a mixture of drabble and challenge: somebody gives you a word and you have five minutes to write about it in free flow.

[livejournal.com profile] crowgirl13 encouraged me to try it to overcome my writer's block. She gave me the word ribbon, and these are the results:

Title: Ribbon
Genre: Riley-centric genfic.
Rating: Teen
Setting: Post-Into the Woods
Warnings: Just a tad of Angst. Unbetaed
Disclaimer: I do not own Riley, or anything else. Joss Wheldon and ME do.
A/N1: this story is related to a snippet I sent to [livejournal.com profile] crowgirl13 that will see the light of the day only if and when she delivers her wee fic and as such to her dedicated.
A/N2:this fic is the first thing I wrote after a long draught, so I'd love feedback, tons of it.Please? Pretty please?

He was the youngest son. His mother had been a child herself when she had started having children, and was just old enough to be a mother by the time he had come around. He was a shy, cute little thing, and his mother, lost in an house full of men, loved to secretly handle him like the daughter she never had.
He still remembered, in that lucid and foggy way we remember our earliest memories the trip to town, all the family decked out in their best church clothes, dressed up to have their photo taken professionally. His father's birthday present to his mother, anxious to have a memory of her boys to hold on to, before they started growing up and went away, the way men do.
His clearest memory was that of the little white ribbon his mother had put on his still nearly white but already unruly hair. A lovely little bow, making a a little curl stand up, the way she had seen on the magazines.
With the peace of the loved, he had smiled throughout the whole picture ordeal, safe on his mother's lap, surrounded by his brothers, fidgety in their dress clothes and kept quiet only by the imposing presence of their father, whose hand on his mother's shoulder was for his baby self the final confirmation everything was right in the world.
Over the years the ribbon, now dominating the front room from his privileged spot on the mantelpiece, had been the reason of much teasing from his brothers, but on his last visit home, on the spur of the moment, he had asked for a copy.
And now, in dark wetness of Belize, that little ribbon had became his Ariadne's thread, guiding him through the maze of his own sanity, taking him every corner a step closer to home.

Aw. Poor Riley. Its what kept him safe. His own goodness and sense of family.

*Points frantically at the wee fic*
SEE? I just knew it would work! And boy, it worked well- I love this!

This is so bittersweet and keen. The strength and stability Riley feels in his family makes so *much* sense. You watch him in Season Four, particularly in the early eps,and you can see the confidence a good home life gives one. *Hugs Riley*

I'm excited about the dedication; no one's ever dedicated something to me before. *bounces* And yet...you're holding the other bit *hostage?! Geez! I really don't think Riley would approve.

What another word?

Very nice ficlet. I always saw Riley as coming from a stable family background as well. And I always thought he was too good for Buffy.
