This week-end in Italy there will be a referendum on IVF. Or better 4 referendums.

1) Asks people to allow fertilisation using a donor's sperm. current legislation allows only IVF between couples in which both parents intend to have an active part in bringing up the child

2)Asks people to allow to use unused embrios for research purposes

3)Asks people to allow the testing of embrios before the implant for genetic defects

4)Asks people to remove any boundaries on who gets IVF. Currrently only couple (married or not) in stable relationships who cannot have children otherwise have access.

I think I am going to vote 2 yes and 2 no, the two yes being the use for reasearch and the testing of embrios, the first one to shut up the scientists, the second one to protect the current legislation on abortion, that I quite like.

If it was down to me, however, I would stop any IVF practice. These are my reasons:

- It keeps a woman locked in her role as reproductor

-It is expensive and ineffectual. Only 33% of IVFs are successful.25 Years after the first successful one, the percentage hasn't gone up.

-There are no studies on the long term effects of this procedures on women.

But the most important one for me is:

-If Nature says you cannot have children, it has its reasons, usually perfectly good.
